No race reports for this meeting

Old business:
Race director- another long discussion was held and it was decided to get a volunteer director for each race that FAR will put on. This will take the burden off a single race director. If there is no one that will take on an individual race responsibility then FAR will offer to rent our equipment but not direct that race. Tom said that we have 12 races that we do and 6-8 of them are open for volunteer directors. Four are definitely covered at this time. Tom Pfefferly has already agreed to direct the new Drug Task Force race. Tom Etchill recommended that the other races be discussed at the January meeting and directors chosen at that time. All were in favor. Tom Etchill has written all the protocol for race management and that is available to each race director. Race planning and data forms will also be available to the race directors.

New business:
New members were introduced. We were pleased to welcome Ken and Betty Hubel of Huron, and Richard James from Toledo as new members to FAR.

The FAR web site has not been updated and Tom Etchill will check on it.

Any contributions to the newsletter would be appreciated. Feel free to make your interests known and even submit an article or two! Also, if you have any pictures to share send them to Jo Moore.

Next season will try to include any upcoming races in our local area. In the mean time, continue to check web sites for area races. Here are some web sites to access northern Ohio races:

Meeing adjourned and guest speaker, Jeff Hammond introduced.

Jeff Hammond gave an informative and interesting talk on cross training for runners. Jeff relates he was a past runner, and now a personal trainer and body builder and is being in photo shoots for a calendar also featuring some famous individuals he has trained. He was 140 pounds when trained for a marathon, and now 200. (and by his appearance all muscle)

Advice to runners-don't overdo. Control intensity when you cross train to strengthen muscles. He demonstrated circuit lunges, which are good instead of all the abd. crunches. Lunges with the proper form will not injure knees and will elongate muscle and not shorten and tighten which runners do not want. Do a series of 10 min. on treadmill or bike as warm up first and then do forward, reverse and inward lunges. This is also a cardio workout and use in place of a running day. This also promotes posture and stabalizes balance.

Home dumbells can be used for bicep curls, and back and chest fly reps. One of the best abd. exercises is bicycle crunches and also knees to chest.

Jeff eats protein with a veg. every 3 hours such as chicken and green vegetable, or salmon and spinach leaves, or cottage cheese. He does not advise the carb restriction for runners, but when in training for photos, he does not eat carbs. Water and A LOT of it is his beverage !!!!

(Guess George Fosco has the right idea as he already has been doing lunges and pushups each AM for years !!)

Jeff also has a line of clothing. Visit Jeff Hammond's web site: www.makemsweat.com
