Jeff Hammond gave an informative and interesting talk on cross training for runners. Jeff relates he was a past runner, and now a personal trainer and body builder and is being in photo shoots for a calendar also featuring some famous individuals he has trained. He was 140 pounds when trained for a marathon, and now 200. (and by his appearance all muscle) Advice to runners-don't overdo. Control intensity when you cross train to strengthen muscles. He demonstrated circuit lunges, which are good instead of all the abd. crunches. Lunges with the proper form will not injure knees and will elongate muscle and not shorten and tighten which runners do not want. Do a series of 10 min. on treadmill or bike as warm up first and then do forward, reverse and inward lunges. This is also a cardio workout and use in place of a running day. This also promotes posture and stabalizes balance. Home dumbells can be used for bicep curls, and back and chest fly reps. One of the best abd. exercises is bicycle crunches and also knees to chest. Jeff eats protein with a veg. every 3 hours such as chicken and green vegetable, or salmon and spinach leaves, or cottage cheese. He does not advise the carb restriction for runners, but when in training for photos, he does not eat carbs. Water and A LOT of it is his beverage !!!! (Guess George Fosco has the right idea as he already has been doing lunges and pushups each AM for years !!) Jeff also has a line of clothing. Visit Jeff Hammond's web site: www.makemsweat.com
March 27, 2003 Chuck Willis presiding with 11 members present at Bay Winds. Reminder to get 2003 membership in. Total of 68 memberships (98 members) for 2003 compared to 2002 of 127 memberships (164 members). A list will be given next month of non-renewals, and maybe committee could personally contact. Race report from Tom E.: Next FAR race will be Kelley's Old business: Club runs: To start 1st. and 3rd. Thurs.
of May at 7pm at Relay for Life: Will be a sign up sheet next month for teams. Jeff Hammond will speak on cross training next meeting April 24 at Bay Winds. Jeff started as a runner and now body builder and personal trainer and also has a line of sports clothing. This year’s FAR membership forms will be copied to have supply for potential new members at races. Meeting adjourned.
February 23, 2003 Baywinds-7:30, 21 members present, two guests Membership so far for 2003 is 46. Renew those memberships today!! Ron Scott and Jo Moore will assist Deb Bogden with the Lighthouse Half Marathon. A suggestion for the newsletter came from Mike Blaszak about returning the member profiles. We will include one each month starting with new president, Chuck Willis. Relay for Life-John Hinton asked if the club wanted to take part in June. It was decided FAR would participate and Tim Cummings will co-chair with John Hinton. John suggested insurance if we again borrow Perkins' tent. Last year FAR logged the 2nd highest mileage, but we do not know what funds were raised. Ideas for fundraisers were: raffle tickets for $1.00 and a drawing for FAR membership, power bars to be sold. Any other suggestions are welcome. Lisa Schiewe will speak on nutrition at a later date.
